Zi (子林) creates vibrant worlds and portals, leading viewers back to their forgotten kinship with the natural world.
Her art serves as a gentle reminder that we aren't just connected to nature—we are nature, wearing human clothes. Zi's work invites viewers to remove those clothes, metaphorically speaking, and remember what it feels like to be as alive as a thunderstorm, as ancient as a mountain, and as a playful as a flower, dancing under the sunlight.
Through my work, I seek to dissolve our imagined boundaries and sense of ‘separateness’ to each other and every part of the natural world.
Artist philosophy
Rediscovering Wonder
My vibrant colour palettes and seemingly otherworldly landscapes are deliberate invitations to rediscover enchantment in our immediate surroundings. These are not fantasies but rather revelations of what already exists.
Imbuing with Emotion
I start every painting with a Chinese character as the base layer - imbuing my art with a feeling.
I do so to connect to my heritage and discover how ancient symbols such as earth, water and heart live within each character.
The character for '星 (xīng): star, for example
is made up of:
“日” (rì) means "sun" or "day" associated with the sun, time, light, or days
"生" primarily signifies life, growth, and existence
I love the layered meanings and depth. As I build layers of colour and form above this hidden foundation, the character's essence continues to pulse beneath the surface.
